Cost Explorer

See how spend moves through the model

Cost Explorer shows how spend moves through the layers of your Yarken cost model.

It helps you trace spend from finance structures into technology and business views, including cost pools, towers, solutions, and consumers where those layers are part of the model.

This makes Cost Explorer useful when you need to understand allocation outcomes, validate model behavior, or find spend that is still not fully mapped.

What you can do

  1. Review how total spend breaks down across model layers.

  2. Inspect how cost moves from one node to another.

  3. Identify unallocated or partially allocated spend.

  4. Filter the view by period and model context.

  5. Drill into a node to review mapped percentage, mapped from, mapped to, amount, and grand total.

  6. Use the view to support allocation review and model validation.

How Cost Explorer fits the Yarken model

Yarken uses a TBM model to connect financial, operational, and consumption data into business-ready cost views.

Where the full model is in use, the four connected layers are Technology Cost Pools, Technology Resource Towers, Technology Solutions, and Technology Consumers.

Cost Pools represent the finance foundation of the model.

Technology Resource Towers represent the technology lens between spend sources and delivered solutions.

Solutions and consumers connect that spend to products, services, and business accountability.

Cost Explorer helps you see how those layers connect in practice. It does not replace dashboards. It helps explain how dashboard outcomes were created.

How the view works

Each node represents a cost element in the model.

Connections between nodes show how spend is distributed from one layer to the next.

When you select a node, Yarken opens the node details so you can review the allocation result behind that point in the model.

Use click and drag to move around the explorer.

Use zoom controls to review dense parts of the model more closely.

Use year and month filters to focus on the period you want to validate.

When to use Cost Explorer

Use Cost Explorer when you need to:

  • validate monthly allocation results

  • explain how spend moved through the model

  • investigate unallocated cost

  • review whether mapping logic is working as expected

  • prepare for deeper analysis in dashboards, Analytics, planning, showback, or chargeback

Good to know

  • Cost Explorer is most useful after the relevant source data and mappings are loaded.

  • If spend is still unallocated, the explorer helps you see where the gap is, but the fix usually happens in the relevant mapping or rule workflow.

  • The view is strongest as a diagnostic tool. Use it to investigate why results look the way they do.

  • Not every environment uses every TBM layer at the same depth. Cost Explorer can still be valuable when the model is strongest in Finance and Technology views and is still maturing toward fuller consumer reporting.

Next step

Review the relevant mapping or allocation guide for the layer you are investigating, such as Cost Pools or Towers.
